Abstract

This paper studies the financing side of large, preannounced index additions. Space Exploration Technologies Corporation entered the Nasdaq-100 before the market open on 7 July 2026, creating a 6 July implementation event. I construct model-implied funding pressure for 93 incumbents by allocating the entrant-funding requirement across pre-event weights and scaling implied sale dollars by pre-event average daily dollar volume. A one-standard-deviation increase in pressure is associated with 12.1 percent higher implementation-day volume relative to normal. The coefficient is 8.6323 with HC3 p = 0.0000283; randomization, bootstrap, and leave-one-out inference agree. A strictly lagged specification retains an 8.3 percent effect (p = 0.0080), while the coefficient decays and becomes insignificant on the next session. I then apply the frozen construction to eleven earlier off-cycle Nasdaq-100 additions from 2023 to 2026, using QQQ holdings disclosed before each announcement and controls measured over the preceding 20 sessions. Ten of twelve event coefficients, including SpaceX, are positive. The equal-event mean is 0.0672 log points per pressure standard deviation, with an exact event-sign randomization p-value of 0.0063. A stacked regression with event and sector fixed effects yields 0.0675 (event-clustered p = 0.0199). Capacity-scaled funding pressure therefore orders incumbent turnover beyond the SpaceX episode, while SpaceX provides the cleanest fast-entry implementation test.
